Founded in 1954, the mission of Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts is to present outstanding performing arts and arts education programs, reflective of Brooklyn’s diverse communities, at affordable prices.

Brooklyn Center’s presentations explore both the classical traditions and the boldest contemporary performances, embracing the world culture that defines Brooklyn. Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts welcomes over 70,000 people to the 2,400 seat Walt Whitman Theatre each season, and boasts one of the largest arts education programs in the borough, serving schoolchildren from over 300 schools annually.

Among the hundreds of artists and companies who have graced the stage of the Walt Whitman Theatre are Ray Charles, Barbara Cook, Savion Glover, Tony Bennett, Luciano Pavarotti, Vladimir Horowitz, Ballet Folklórico de México, Les Ballets Africains, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, The Moiseyev Dance Company, The National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica, The Acting Company, and many others.

The mission of BCBC is to present outstanding performing arts and arts education programs, reflective of Brooklyn's diverse communities, at affordable prices. A central part of the Center's mission is to introduce young people to the performing arts, enhance their creativity, and expose them to new cultures and ideas. As one of the largest arts education presenters in the Brooklyn, Brooklyn Center annually welcomes over 70,000 people, including 46,000 schoolchildren, parents, and teachers. Brooklyn Center is committed to presenting emerging and established artists from around the world. Artists and companies that have graced the BCBC stage include Luciano Pavarotti, Isaac Stern, Gregory Hines, Beverly Sills, Ray Charles, Itzhak Perlman, Martha Graham, Margot Fonteyn, Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández, Les Ballets Africains, Moiseyev Dance Company, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, The Acting Company, and National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica. The Center also works closely with several of the Brooklyn College's renowned departments, including the Conservatory of Music of Brooklyn College and the Department of Theater, in hosting a variety of student and faculty performances.
