The Collegiate Times, Blacksburg's oldest newspaper, was established in 1903 at Virginia Tech. It began as a sports-oriented newspaper but has grown into a student-run, daily publication covering campus news, features, sports and opinions. The newspaper stopped receiving university funds in 1979 and has since supported its operations with advertising and subscription revenues.

The paper is published Tuesday through Friday of the academic year, except during exams and breaks, and has a circulation of 14,000 with a readership of more than 26,000. The Collegiate Times editorial staff maintains its offices in 365 Squires Student Center, and the business staff maintains its offices at 618 N. Main Street. Collegiate Times advertising is managed by Collegiate Times sister company College Media Solutions.

The Collegiate Times holds membership in the Associated Collegiate Press, the Virginia Press Association, Southern University Newspapers, College Media Advisers, and the College Newspaper Business and Advertising Manager Association.

The Collegiate Times is a division of the Educational Media Company at Virginia Tech Inc., a student-run corporation also consisting of the Bugle, WUVT, VTTV, SPPS, College Media Solutions, and the Silhouette.
