ABOUT Thank you for stopping by! I’m a Mom of two children, 7 and 5, who has been on a lot of detours in life the last four years. I currently live in Tennessee but have lived all over the country – Florida, California, Arizona, North Carolina, and West Virginia. I had bariatric surgery in 2010 that changed my life and gave me more confidence. Then in January of 2013, I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Fibromyalgia. Due to my bariatric surgery, they are having a hard time finding medicine that my body will respond to without horrible side effects. My RA diagnosis has caused me to make another detour in my life and give up my career in the corporate world to become a full time stay at home Mom. Regardless of the reason we take the detour, we can still enjoy the scenery along the way and may even gain some important insight in to the world and ourselves. In April of 2010, I embarked upon my first detour in my life. Prior to then I had lived almost my entire life being obese and super morbidly obese. I decided to put myself on the detour of having bariatric surgery. When I began this detour, I weighed in at 382 pounds. I entered the operating room to have a procedure called Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch, also referred to as the BPD/DS. It was not an easy recovery and I dealt with complications a long with way (3 additional surgeries), but in the first 18 months, I lost 200 pounds and gained a new life. I could play with my children, clean my house, fit in an airplane seat, and buy clothes at any store I could afford. It was a brand new life for me and it was exciting and at times somewhat scary. I was able to stand in front of a classroom of co-workers and speak confidently because I was no longer worried about how I looked. I even cut my hair short (which I love!) and began to develop a style for myself. In the Fall of 2012, my life began to change again and in January of 2013, I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. I hurt daily in various joints and I never know from one day to another where it will hurt or if I will hurt, be fatigued, or feel OK that day. I am in the process of getting on a treatment regimen and evaluating how the medicines are going to work with me given my altered anatomy and to balance all the nutritional needs of the BPD/DS and RA. The goal of this site is to share the insights that I have learned through my journey with weight loss surgery as well as RA. It is also to share recipes, crafts, and other tips that I have implemented in to my life now that I’m at home full time. Feel free to leave me feedback or contact me if you have any comments.
