About

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is widely acknowledged to be the biggest arts festival in the world and takes place every August for 3 weeks in Scotland’s capital city. Every year thousands of performers take to a multitude of stages all over Edinburgh to present shows for every taste. From big names in the world of entertainment to unknown artists looking to build their careers, the festival caters for everyone and includes theatre, comedy, dance, physical theatre, musicals, operas, music, exhibitions and events.

In 1947, 8 theatre groups turned up uninvited to perform at the Edinburgh International Festival, an initiative created to celebrate and enrich European cultural life in the wake of the Second World War. Not being part of the official programme of the International festival didn’t stop these performers – they just went ahead and staged their shows anyway.

The Festival Fringe Society formalised the existence of this collective of performances, provided information to artists, published the Fringe programme and created a central box office. Its constitution was written in line with the ethos that brought these theatre companies to Edinburgh back in 1947: that the Society was to take no part in vetting the festival’s programme. To this day that policy remains at the core of our festival and we’re proud to include in our programme anyone with a story to tell and a venue willing to host them.

Excellent but flawed

Excellent app for keeping track of which shows you have booked and finding your way to venues. The flaw in the app is when you use it to buy tickets. There is no basket so every purchase is treated as a standalone purchase and you pay 90p booking fee on each ticket (unless you are buying more than five tickets for one show). So I do my main ticket buying on the Fringe website (where the booking fee is capped at £4.50 per visit) and only use the app when adding single shows. The app lists all ticket purchases, whether bought through app or website. I did contact the app developers about this last year and their answer was that the lack of a basket was not a significant issue as very few people bought more than five tickets at a time. What a singularly stupid answer, given that the lack of a basket limits the number of tickets that you can buy.

Being back the old app

The old app was better. The new one for 2016 is too slow and it also relies on having an Internet connection to look things up. The old app had all the shows downloaded into the app and synched content when you opened it. The syncing meant it updates shows which changed (venue, time, cancelled). But the best part was being able to find shows or look up their description OFFLINE. However the new app LOOKS good and is pretty easy to use. Just bring back the functionality of the old app!

Appalling - does not work

I used the 2015 App very successfully last year and was looking forward to the 2016 Fringe!. I booked up a lot of shows on line as soon as the Fringe programme was released - the updated App was not available. Once it was and I had downloaded it - and I had logged in: I found that unfortunately the updated App did not recognise any of the shows I'd booked. Although they did show up in my history! To make matters worse - Every search comes up with the same message "NO SHOWS FOUND" ; "NO VENUES FOUND" etc, etc Bitterly disappointing! I just wonder how many ticket sales have been lost as a result of this App not working....... I tried a search on what was on nearby on Saturday night and yet again it came up with NO SHOWS FOUND VERY POOR APP FOR THE WORLDS BEST ARTS FESTIVAL!

Very low quality app!

Basic functionality - like being able to enter and save required payment details - is broken.

Doesn't share data

The app fails to share data between between instances. If I add a favourite on my phone I would expect it to appear on the iPad. Indeed the iPad doesn't even list the tickets I have bought (which appear on my phone). All together a very poor attempt. Was any testing done on this app before it was released?
