About

For Books' Sake (www.forbookssake.net) is the charitable organisation dedicated to championing writing by women, empowering women and girls to tell their stories and have their voices heard. For Books’ Sake supports, educates and celebrates women writers of all backgrounds and abilities. Through a national programme of events and workshops, online editorial, publishing and other projects, For Books’ Sake aims to counteract systemic, insitutionalised gender biases impacting women writers, providing an alternative platform plus resources for writers, readers, publishers and educators.

We’ve collaborated with brilliant organisations – including World Book Night, The Arvon Foundation, The Lesbian & Gay Foundation, London Rollergirls, Rape Crisis, Womankind Worldwide, arts and literature festivals across the UK and many, many more – as well as growing a global online community of over 20,000, being featured on TV and radio and in print, and celebrated by iconic, critically-acclaimed authors.

FOUNDED IN 2010, FOR BOOKS’ SAKE IS THE INTELLIGENT BUT IRREVERENT UK WEBZINE DEDICATED TO PROMOTING AND CELEBRATING WRITING BY WOMEN. PROVIDING A DEDICATED PLATFORM FOR READERS AND WRITERS ALIKE, WE FEATURE BOOKS BY AND FOR INDEPENDENT WOMEN. With daily news, reviews, essays, features and interviews, For Books’ Sake shines spotlights on classic and contemporary writing by both iconic and emerging women authors, from reading recommendations to in-depth analysis. For Books’ Sake is a response to the systemic and institutionalised sexism in mainstream media, publishing and beyond. Independent audits such as the annual VIDA count continually find that despite reading, writing, buying and selling more than their male counterparts, women authors account for an average of only one in four mainstream book reviews. Similarly, male authors are twice as likely as win the Booker than women writers, and a similar bias can be seen for the shortlists and winners of most major literary prizes. For Books’ Sake aims to raise awareness and address that imbalance; campaigning for change by both lobbying mainstream media for better gender equality in their books coverage as well as providing an exciting, accessible alternative dedicated to championing the best upcoming and established women writers. Our first publishing project, Short Stack, was a ground-breaking anthology of the best new pulp fiction written by women, published by and in collaboration with Pulp Press in 2012. Our latest short story collection is the first of its kind: Derby Shorts, a groundbreaking anthology of fiction from the roller derby track was published in collaboration with the London Rollergirls earlier this year. We’ve been featured in print, on TV and radio and celebrated by iconic, critically-acclaimed authors including Bidisha and Sarah Dunant. We’ve been involved in all sorts of high profile events, from meeting Margaret Atwood at the first ever World Book Night to curating the three-day literary programme for Ladyfest Ten and featuring on the programme at London’s largest outdoor arts extravaganza, Thames Festival. In addition to collaborating with organisations such as Womankind Worldwide, the Lesbian and Gay Foundation and arts and literature festivals across the UK, we also coordinate our own programme of live literary events around the country, championing women writers and campaigning for change with readings, workshops, panel discussions, interactive installations and much more. For Books’ Sake is not-for-profit, powered by a team of voluntary, unpaid contributors and editors; all the proceeds from our various projects are reinvested back into our continued promotion and celebration of writing by women.
