The Erie Times-News was founded as the Erie Daily Times on April 12, 1888. GateHouse Media (under New Media Investment Group) purchased the company on Jan. 12, 2016.

    History of the Times Publishing Company John Mead John Mead On April 12, 1888, the first edition of the Erie Daily Times was produced in a small cellar office at West 9th and State Streets. John Mead eventually acquired the newspaper from his eight partners and the Erie Daily Times has remained in the Mead family ever since. In 1924, the Times moved to a new building on West 10th Street, now the United Way building, and the Erie Daily Times continued to prosper. John Mead began training his sons, George, John, Jr. and Frank in the newspaper business. In 1941, tragedy struck. Founder John Mead, Sr. was killed in an accident. The company would be run by his wife, the former Mary Boland, until her death in 1957. In 1949, the company continued to expand its coverage by introducing a new Sunday edition, the Sunday Times-News. The new paper was an immediate success. In January, 1957, the Times Publishing Company acquired the Erie Dispatch Herald. With staff from both newspapers, the company moved into the old Dispatch building at East 12th and French Streets. Just about three days after the expansion, the first edition of the Erie Morning News was printed. Mary Boyland Mary Boyland In 1969, the company expanded into its current headquarters on 12th and Sassafras Streets by purchasing the most sophisticated and modern newspaper production equipment available. 1988 100th anniversary of the Erie Daily Times. 1992 Frank P. Mead, Treasurer and Business Manager, dies. Cousins Edward and Michael Mead continue managing the enterprise. 1997 Created GoErie.com and CyberInk, an Internet marketing company. October 2000 Merged Morning News and Erie Daily Times into one morning newspaper called the Erie Times-News.
