The Tillamook Headlight was founded on June 8, 1888 by C.E. Wilson and editor J.E. Edwards. The first issue was published on a Friday and consisted of eight pages, four of which were filled with local news and ads. The other four pages were filled with national advertising and general interest news. The reason for the national ads was simple: Newsprint already printed on one side was the least expensive way for a publisher to get newsprint and attract readers. The ads promised cures for catarrh (stuffy noses), hay fever, piles, sore throats, lost manhood, etc. And the articles covered such topics as ways to earn a living, tales of success and failure, humorous yarns and excerpts from other newspapers. Later in 1888, Wilson went bankrupt and reportedly left the county owing a lot of people money. One creditor, Theodore Steinhilber, took over the newspaper and formed a partnership with George W. Petit, owner of the Occidental Hotel and Livery Stables. The Headlight, together with its commercial printing business, became financially stable, and became the newspaper of record for Tillamook County settlers and timber interests. Steinhilber's motto was published weekly below the nameplate: "Be honest, be just, and fear not. Hew to the line, and let the chips fall where they may." On Jan. 25, 1889, Steinhilber bought out Petit's interest and apparently made a handsome profit. Steinhilber had dropped the national news, reducing the Headlight to four pages, but within a few months it was back up to six pages, and on April 19, 1889, he added two more pages which he announced on the front page. "While this may be a rash venture yet we think the increase in general prosperity and population will be great enough to warrant the additional expense." Steinhilber's marriage to Miss Nannie Bunn on October 4, 1889 was announced the same day he announced the sale of The Headlight to W.F.D. Jones, an experienced newspaperman. "As to the political complexion of the paper, it is Republican. It is not the purpose to argue the question in this connection, suffice it to say that the columns of the paper will speak for themselves." Jones lowered the subscription rates from $2 per year to $1.50. On Dec. 6, 1889, Jones sold one-half interest to B.C. Lamb, and in March 1890 the Headlight was changed from a tabloid to a full-size newspaper. Lamb and Jones enjoyed a solid partnership until. April 17, 1891, when Lamb announced, "Goodbye. With this issue my connection with the Headlight terminates. Thanking my friends for courtesies in the past, and commending my enemies to the tender care of the future management..." Jones continued on alone until July 1892, when he hired Dr. T. H. Meserole as associate editor. His name appears off and on through mid-1893. On July 13, 1893, Thomas Coates bought the Headlight from Jones, who moved away from the county and eventually took charge of the Astorian. Coates operated the paper for almost one year, but suffered from a drop in advertising and subscriptions and an increase in paper costs. On May 4, 1894, W.F.D. Jones returned to Tillamook to take back the Headlight. The newspaper returned to tabloid size May 17 and remained a half-sheet until January 1985, when it resumed full size. On Sept. 1, 1896 Jones sold the paper to D. Dek Bowman and moved to California. In October 1898, Bowman sold it to Fred C. Baker, who operated it for 22 years. He was a real promoter of Tillamook County, publishing countless articles and special publications. In November 1920, Baker sold it to Leslie Harrison and Harold Hamstreet. In November 1925, The Headlight was leased to A. Lea Mallery. Two years later, Mallary sold his interests to Roy Blodgett. In September 1928, Blodgett sold his interests to Irl McSherry and George E. Martin. In August 1929, The Headlight was sold to Thomas Walpole, David A. DeCook and Elsie DeCook. The Headlight merged with the Tillamook Herald to become the Headlight-Herald in April 1934.
