Yes, I know that you expected someone named “Penny,” but there is a bit of a story behind that name… In 2009, my husband, Shane, and I felt trapped in a dark pit of financial problems. Being challenged by a financial adviser, I decided to seek a way to cut our family’s grocery bill to allow room in our one income budget to pay down debt. Quickly, I discovered that when combining coupons with sales prices and buying in quantities to build a stockpile large enough to last until the next sales cycle, our grocery expense on each trip to the store was lowered by 50% to 90%. How “Penny” Got Her Name Since our coupon binder was saving us so much money, it was added as an official member of the family and my husband named the notebook “Penny.” Each time we used “Penny” and saved big, I would share her deals with friends and family on Facebook. couponing blog In 2010, I felt lead to share her shopping trips and tips in more detail and launched a couponing website, A Penny Saved is a Penny Earned. I began writing as if our coupon binder was the author, signing everything as “Penny.” The website grew quickly and the readers assumed that “Penny” was MY name. The name became so popular with my readers that I gave our family pseudo-names related to money too, referring to my husband as Bill and our children as Lira (Italy), Franc (France), Ruble (Russia) and Ariary (Madagascar). Sharing Our Homeschool Lifestyle homeschooling blog When our family began homeschooling in 2010, I decided to publish the details of our family’s school at another blog, Growing Up Homeschooled. Through that website, I provided everything from detailed accounts of our lesson plans to creative solutions for schooling a child with special needs. Everything Comes Together As the details of my day increased too quickly, I found that life was out of balance. Blogging while homeschooling and managing our home was becoming more difficult and there was still so much more that I wanted to share with my readers. So, in January 2012, my husband and I agreed that we should combine the two websites into one, Meet Penny. Although my family is my primary ministry, I have my husbands complete support and firmly believe that God has placed me in the position as a blogger to share our life experiences, especially the mistakes I have made, in order to help others avoid those pitfalls. I often say, “With knowledge comes great responsibility.” My hope is to be an encouragement to other families who may be facing similar situations. Now, with life more balanced, I am proud to be the owner of the Inspired Bloggers Network where I mentor other bloggers and share recipes at Frugal Family Favorites. I am blessed to reside in Mobile, Alabama with my husband and our four children (ages ten years old and under).
