News West Publishing, a division of Brehm Communications, purchased the Mohave Valley News in Bullhead City, Ariz., from Western Newspapers in 1991. At the time, News West published the Booster Advertiser, a twice-weekly classified advertising product, while Western published the Valley News thrice weekly. The competing publications were both looking at going daily. Western decided to sell and News West became the publisher of the Valley News in June, 1991. A fourth day of publication was added, followed by a fifth day in 1992. The name of the newspaper was changed at that time to the Mohave Valley Daily News. In July, 1994, a sixth day was added to the newly redesigned publication. New computers, color use, pagination and other advances in publishing technology were incorporated into the production of the six-day daily throughout the remainder of the 1990s. Growth has been continuous for the Daily News since its creation. Today, the newspaper boasts a 10,000-plus paid circulation along the Colorado River in the communities of Bullhead City, Fort Mojave, Mohave Valley, Topock, Golden Shores, Ariz., Laughlin, Nev., and Needles, Calif. The publication's colorful presentation, writing and photography have won many state awards since 1993. News West also publishes the Laughlin, Nevada Times, Needles Desert Star, Colorado River Weekender, Laughlin Entertainer weeklies, Clippin' The River, Colorado River Real Estate Magazine and still produces the Booster Advertiser. Brehm Communications, Inc. recently celebrated its 85th anniversary. The company was launched in 1919 by W.J. (Bill) McGiffin and partners with the purchase of the Fort Madison, Iowa, Evening Democrat. After World War II, W.J. (Bill) Brehm started with the W.J. McGiffin Newspaper Company at the Bell-Maywood Industrial Post as a printer's devil. Brehm became publisher of the Post in 1951. Following the death of McGiffin in 1955, Brehm served as general manager of the company until 1960 when he became president. Today, the Brehm family produces more than 40 newspapers, including six dailies, across the country.
