  • Key Differentiator
Launched in August 2014, Motherland was born as an online magazine “for women who happen to be mums” – a much-needed antidote to the saccharine-sweet media traditionally aimed at new mothers. Featuring a mix of thoughtful, long-form content, interviews, and podcasts – as well as events, talks and creative collaborations – Motherland showcased brilliant writing, beautiful design and thought-provoking debate, set within the context of modern parenthood. Founded by mother-of-three and former Independent journalist, Charlotte Philby, together with her husband, graphic designer Barney Beech, Motherland was both a mouth-piece and reference point for those who had had children but would not be wholly defined by that. It covered features, fashion, food, travel, culture and more, guided by a design-led aesthetic and a meaningful, honest, irreverent voice. Thanks to a hugely loyal readership that straddled continents and demographics, over the years Motherland was featured and syndicated in publications from Marie Claire, and Stylist magazine, to The Guardian and The Times. Collaborating with the likes of the Photographers Gallery and Donna Wilson, while creating content and campaigns for brands including Gap, Danone and Innocent – as well as working with countless independent start-ups – Motherland represented a new era in digital media. In October 2015 we launched our online store selling a selection of smart, beautiful and ethically-made products including exclusive collaborations with the likes of artist Jamie Julien Brown and Scandinavian high-street store Polarn O. Pyret… We also put on parties, workshops and classes at a range of UK venues – from brand launches to yoga; creative writing classes to salon events.
