I’m 24 years old and I live in Atlantic Canada. I work in marketing for a small start up and I’m happy to say I love my job. I live in a 400 square foot house with my husband, my dog Molly, and a hypo-allergenic cat named Mia. I love to run, do yoga, cook, read and blog. I’ve got a degree in Commerce from a good school and I’m ready to start out my awesome adult life! There’s only one problem, that university education resulted in a whole lot of debt. I didn’t max out my credit cards, I wasn’t a shopaholic. I didn’t even party all that much. I worked during every summer at well paying jobs, but still, I finished up school with over $26,000 owing in student loans. I also had to buy a car, because that’s what adults do right? All in all, I started out my adult life with almost $38,000 in debt. To learn more about my debt, check out my facts page. This blog is meant to chronicle my story of getting out of debt, and moving towards financial security. These aren’t unnatural feats that are unattainable by the majority of debt-ridden 20 somethings (there are a lot of us out there!). I assure you, I’m entirely average. If I can do it, so can you. Why My Alternate Life? I grew up with the misconceived idea that I would go to university, get a killer job right out of school, and spend the rest of my life travelling, buying whatever I want, and generally living the life that had been promised to me since I was still refusing to play with Barbies. Unfortunately, due to something called reality, that lifestyle is not an option. So far, I’ve done everything “right” in life. I’ve gone to a good school and gotten a degree that promised a job after, I worked throughout said education to minimize my student loans, I got a job right away, etc etc. Even though I’ve made the “right” decisions, I’ve still ended up in a pile of debt, which has put my ideal lifestyle out of reach. Instead, I’m living my alternate lifestyle, which includes a loving husband, a hypo-allergenic cat, a quirky shelter dog, and a whole lot of debt from the previously mentioned university education. But that’s ok, because while I’m committed to eradicating my debt quickly, I’ve also got a life to live, and I plan on making that life as awesome as possible, just without the expensive clothes and massive house.
