Before joining Radio, he was the chief engineer at stations in Cleveland; Boyertown/Reading, PA; and Bridgeport, CT. He was a regular contributor to Radio and Broadcast Engineering magazines during that time. He is the past president of the Society of Broadcast Engineers. He is certified as a Professional Broadcast Engineer and a Broadcast Networking Technologist by the Society of Broadcast Engineers. He is the past chairman of the SBE National Board of Directors. In 2004, Scherer contributed the foreword to the book Career Opportunities in Radio from Checkmark Books.
