    For over 30 years, Isthmus has cared about life in Madison - civic life, cultural life and countercultural life. Vince O'Hern and Fred Milverstedt laid out the first Isthmus on April 9, 1976 in the living room of co-founder Milverstedt's apartment at the north end of Livingston Street. The new publication would have an emphasis on personal voice, local stories and local personalities, all of which continues to this day. In 1977, the paper moved to Hotel Washington and most recently to 101 King Street in late 1992. Through the years the news and art coverage has grown longer and provided more topics in-depth but Isthmus still makes its point through parody and irreverence. While many think of Isthmus as incurably smartass and convinced of its own hipness, Isthmus is more of a reflection of Madison than some will admit. The mission of Isthmus is to meld coverage of arts, politics, media, economics, and government - all the stuff of life - in a way meant to yield a truer perception of their community for the residents of greater Madison. Isthmus seeks to inform rather than persuade, to influence through observation, to participate in the free exchange of ideas and information, and to return the confidence and support of the community by serving as an agent of reflection and progress. In its role as watchdog Isthmus bites its friends as well as its foes. Isthmus publishes its weekly newspaper, many supplement publications, including Annual Manual, Dining, Kids & Parents, and Abode among others and on the World Wide Web through The Daily Page. The number of regular readers continues to grow and now includes over 170,000 local adults who are active, educated and in the acquisition phase of their lives. They remain loyal to Isthmus and its advertisers. As Isthmus embarks on its second 30 years of defining and being defined, Madison's weekly newspaper remains committed to award-winning, cutting-edge journalism that reflects the diversity and interests of our community.
