About

The News & Observer traces its roots to a paper called the Sentinal, founded in Raleigh in 1865 and later absorbed by The Observer and then merged with The News. The News & Observer was purchased at auction in 1894 by Josephus Daniels, who later served as secretary of the Navy under President Woodrow Wilson and ambassador to Mexico under Franklin D. Roosevelt. The Daniels family owned the paper until 1995, when it was purchased by McClatchy.

A company with deep roots in the Triangle, The News & Observer Publishing Co. is a modern information company that publishes news and information in both digital and print formats to serve a growing market. Our publications include The News & Observer, one of the nation’s best regional newspapers, and 10 bi-weekly community newspapers. The company launched nando.net, one of the nation’s first internet service providers, in 1994, and today is home to both newsobserver.com and triangle.com, two of the region’s leading websites. We offer comprehensive marketing and advertising solutions that range from cutting-edge rich media online ads to traditional newspaper inserts.

The News & Observer is widely regarded as one of the nation's best regional newspapers and places a strong emphasis on investigative reporting and watchdog journalism. In 1996, the paper was awarded the Pulitzer Prize Gold Medal for Public Service for its work showing how commercial hog farms were affecting the environment and economy in Eastern North Carolina.
