Originally headquartered at the Congress Square Hotel (and so the call letters 'CSH'), WCSH-TV began telecasting on Sunday afternoon, December 20, 1953. William H. Rines and Maine Governor Burton M. Cross took part in the dedication ceremonies. Founded by the Rines family, owners of the Congress Square Hotel and WCSH Radio, the television station was a natural addition. In 1977, under the leadership of Mary Rines-Thompson WCSH 6 was moved to One Congress Square, where we continue to operate today.

Local news coverage was a major consideration right from the start. From the original Channel 6 News Journal to present day WCSH NEWS CENTER 6, the people of NEWS CENTER have won the loyalty and trust of more Maine viewers than any other Maine news and information source. Utilizing the strength of sister station WLBZ 2 in Bangor, NEWS CENTER is truly the largest statewide news and weather service. WCSH 6 has featured NBC Network news, primetime and sports programming since our sign-on. NBC Nightly News, The Today Show and The Tonight Show have continued to be favorite choices for television viewing.

WCSH 6 has produced many favorite local programs. Romper Room, Weekday, Youth Cavalcade and The Dave Astor Show are just a few of the most memorable ones. Currently, Bill Green's Maine and NEWS CENTER's 207 Magazine are viewer favorites. Community service is a very important part of the success of WCSH 6. Efforts including, 6 Who Care, Teens Who Care, Alive and Well and Coats for Kids are just a few of the ways WCSH 6 contributes to the well being of the community. Also, for more than 40 years, the WCSH 6 Art Festival had drawn tens of thousands to downtown Portland on a Saturday in August to enjoy and perhaps purchase a piece of artwork.

In 1998, the Rines-Thompson family sold WCSH 6 and sister station WLBZ 2 to Gannett Co., Inc., a leading international news and information company. In the mid-90's, WCSH 6 and NEWS CENTER expanded our program delivery to include WCSH6.com. In 2002, WCSH-DT signed on the air, bringing high definition television to Southern Maine. In 2015, Gannett spun its publishing properties from its broadcast and digital properties, making WCSH 6 part of TEGNA Media, one of the largest, most geographically diverse broadcasters in the U.S.

No option to stream latest news

I have watched channel 6 ever since I moved to Maine 18 years ago. The lack of options to watch to stream entire newscast on my iPhone or Apple TV is very disappointing. When I get home from work at 1am, I find myself watching WMTW. I also have to add that I haven't been able to watch the news live on the app at all, or all I get is commercials. The WMTW app is much more user friendly.

No audio on live stream

I stream channel 6 on my iPad in the morning to get my news and weather - It is my only news source. Unfortunately, quite frequently the live stream feature does not work. There does not seem to be a rhyme or reason to it. Nothing different on this end, so it is unlikely conductivity on my end.
