WGUC, Cincinnati's Classical Public Radio, was founded in 1960 by a group of citizens who saw the need for a radio station devoted to cultural and public affairs programming in the region. Our History At 4:00 pm on September 21, 1960, the University of Cincinnati's chimes rang out over 90.9 megacycles on the FM band and WGUC was born. Cincinnati's oldest and largest public radio station owes its existence to local classical music enthusiasts Daniel J. Ransohoff , Addison Lanier and Bruce Petrie Sr., who recognized the limited listening options of the area's classical music fans and spearheaded the effort to bring a fine arts and public affairs radio station to the tri-state. WGUC has been a leader in the public radio system throughout its history. The station was one of the first in the nation to meet the Corporation for Public Broadcasting's qualification standards; a charter member of National Public Radio; and a founding member of American Public Radio (now Public Radio International). WGUC was also one of the first NPR uplinks; the producer of the first digital west-to-east transatlantic broadcast; and is the only public radio station with an ongoing music commissioning program. In 2003, WGUC was the first public radio station in Ohio to broadcast an HD Radio™ signal and now broadcasts classical music on WGUC HD1 and jazz on WGUC HD2. And in 2006 WGUC became the first station in America to broadcast in Surround Sound. The future is now upon us.
