  • Key Differentiator
The Observer & Eccentric Media has a rich history of serving western Wayne County and Oakland County families and businesses. Our roots go deep. Some of the suburban area’s most trusted news providers were forerunners of the Observer & Eccentric. For instance: • The Northville Record was first published in 1869. • The Milford Times began in 1871. • The Birmingham Eccentric was founded in 1878. • The South Lyon Herald started in 1879. • The Farmington Enterprise – later to become the Farmington Observer -- was first published in 1888. • The Plymouth Mail – later to become the Plymouth Observer – was first published in 1887. The Observer & Eccentric Media is focused on hometowns in suburban Detroit. Today, O&E Media is a collection of 13 newspaper mastheads, more than 50 special sections and a website appropriately named hometownlife.com to reflect the news of our hometowns -- some of the most affluent suburbs in the metro area. While individual mastheads span a history of more than 100 years, the December 1973 merger of the Observer Newspapers, owned by Philip Power, and the Eccentric Newspapers, owned by Henry Hogan of Birmingham, joined together two prominent and progressive suburban companies. Three years later, Hogan sold his stock to Power who became sole owner. The company grew, changed and become known as HomeTown Communications Network as it expanded throughout Michigan and Ohio. In 2005, HCN – which had grown into a vast collection of community newspapers, local directories and specialty publications -- was sold to Gannett. The O&E has a long, award-winning history of quality community journalism recognized nationally and statewide. We deliver target audiences for advertisers in print and on the web. We are the first source people seek for reliable, relevant information about their hometowns. Staying connected to our communities is essential to our mission. We’re not just a business in the community, we are part of our communities. We volunteer in our communities and collect money for civic groups on Make A Difference Day. We honor the high-performing students in our school districts every year with our Academic All Star team. We sponsor community concerts, host pie-eating contests and volunteer in schools and civic organizations. As the suburban information leader, we deliver award-winning journalism in print, digital, social and video platforms. And we do it all by never forgetting our time-tested mission: “To contribute to the success of our customers and enhance the lives of our readers.”
