The first newspaper in Emmet County was founded in 1875. That same year, The Little Traverse Republic was founded in Harbor Springs by Warren Bowen. Three years later, in 1878, two more papers emerged, The Emmet County Independent in Harbor Springs, the Petoskey City Record, and a summer supplement called The Daily Resorter.

Over the years, the names consolidated as The Emmet County Graphic in Harbor Springs and The Petoskey Evening News.

In the 1930s, William F. Schaller started The Northern Michigan Shopping Review, which soon changed its name to The Northern Michigan Review. In 1953, The Northern Michigan Review and The Petoskey Evening News merged under the name Petoskey News-Review with Albert Schaller as publisher.

In the late 1950s, the News-Review merged with The Emmet County Graphic. Today, the News-Review prints a five days a week daily edition and a summer supplement called The Graphic.

At the time of his death in 1979, Albert Schaller had expanded News-Review interests to include the Gaylord Herald-Times and the Charlevoix Courier. Kirk Schaller started the Super Shopper, and later as president and publisher began PhoneGuide Community Telephone Directory in 1987. Kirk Schaller died Feb. 25, 2001.

In 2006, Northern Michigan Review was purchased by Schurz Communications, Inc. (SCI), based in South Bend, Indiana. SCI is a diversified privately owned, nationwide communication company with properties that are among the most valued and trusted in the information industry.

The first newspaper in Emmet County was founded by Rozelle Rose in Petoskey in 1875. He printed on a headpress, feeding each sheet into the press one at a time. He had to repeat the process to print the other side. The pages were then hand inserted together and hand folded. That same year, The Little Traverse Republic was founded in Harbor Springs by Warren Bowen. Three years later, in 1878, two more papers emerged, The Emmet County Independent in Harbor Springs, the Petoskey City Record, and a summer supplement called The Daily Resorter. Over the years, these diverse editions were bought, sold and changed names to finally consolidate as The Emmet County Graphic in Harbor Springs and The Petoskey Evening News. In the 1930s, William F. Schaller stepped into the press picture and started The Northern Michigan Shopping Review, which soon changed its name to The Northern Michigan Review. In 1953, The Northern Michigan Review and The Petoskey Evening News merged under the name Petoskey News-Review with Albert Schaller as publisher. In the late 1950s, the News-Review merged with The Emmet County Graphic. Today, the News-Review prints a 5 days a week daily edition and a separate summer supplement called The Graphic. The Schaller family was the guiding force behind the daily paper in Northwestern Michigan beyond Traverse City for a half-century. At the time of his death on July 10, 1979, Albert Schaller had been in the publishing business for 56 years, and expanded News-Review interests to include the Gaylord Herald-Times, Charlevoix Courier and The Graphic. Kirk Schaller, then retail ad manager, started the Super Shopper, and later as president and publisher began PhoneGuide Community Telephone Directory in 1987. Kirk Schaller died Feb. 25, 2001. Under the guidance of Albert and Kirk, the News-Review became the second daily newspaper in Michigan to be printed by the then-revolutionary photo offset process. Other members of the Schaller family are still involved in the business through PhoneGuide, including Kirk's wife, Elsa, and his children Gretchen and Patrick. In 2006, Northern Michigan Review was purchased by Schurz Communications, Inc. (SCI), based in South Bend, Indiana. SCI is a diversified privately owned, nationwide communication company with premier properties that are among the most valued and trusted in the news and information industry. What began in 1872 with the South Bend Tribune has grown to include eight daily newspapers. The company also owns weekly and shopper publications, four television stations, four radio stations, two cable companies, and a printing company. Schurz Communications newspapers have a long tradition of editorial excellence, technical innovation and a commitment to the highest standards for quality and excellence in journalism. Our companies put great emphasis on seeking the truth and sharing it with others. Our purpose is to provide a better understanding of the world, so that our readers, viewers and users are more informed and can positively impact our communities and society.
