  • Key Differentiator
Capital Gazette Communications LLC® publishes The Capital®, a daily newspaper serving Annapolis, Anne Arundel County and Kent Island, Maryland. It also publishes the Maryland Gazette® twice a week for residents of Glen Burnie, Pasadena and the surrounding areas of northern Anne Arundel County. The company also publishes two free distribution newspapers: the Bowie Blade-News® and the Crofton - West County Gazette®. In addition to the newspapers, Capital Gazette operates a robust website serving all of its products at www.CapitalGazette.com®. The company is one of the oldest publishers in the country. It started in 1727 with the birth of the Maryland Gazette. Founded by British journalist William Parks, the Maryland Gazette recorded several achievements during its illustrious history. In 1767 Anne Catharine Green became the first female newspaper publisher in the country and the newspaper fought the dreaded stamp tax that started the American Revolution. The Evening Capital was founded by William Abbott in 1884 as a newspaper serving Annapolis. Abbott purchased the Maryland Gazette shortly before World War I. Until 1955, the Maryland Gazette was a weekly covering all of Anne Arundel County, with The Evening Capital serving as Annapolis' daily newspaper. Since 1955, the Maryland Gazette has covered northern Anne Arundel County, becoming a twice-weekly publication in 1969. The Evening Capital became The Capital in 1981. The Sunday Capital was launched in 1987 shortly after the company moved into its current offices at 2000 Capital Drive in Annapolis. The company was owned by Philip Merrill with minority-share partner Landmark Communications from 1968 to 2007. Merrill oversaw tremendous growth as The Capital's circulation nearly tripled over that time. The company launched one of the first newspaper websites in the United States in December 1994 with CapitalOnline.com. The site was revised and renamed HometownAnnapolis.com in July 1998. Websites were also created for the Maryland Gazette and Bowie Blade-News. In April 2012 all the company's websites were consolidated under CapitalGazette.com.
