I'm an mom on a mission: To teach others that living in a healthy, earth-friendly way doesn't have to be hard - or expensive! It doesn't have to be boring or khacki colored, either. I'm a Pacific Northwest girl at heart. I grew up in a small town, went to school in the big city, had a short stint on the East Coast while going to graduate school that I tend to refer to as "my time in exile". Oh yeah, and I used to think people who ate organic food were crazy hippies. When I met him, my New Jersey born husband, was almost as brown (as in not green) as you can be. A lot of this journey we've gone on together and today he's proud to be a cloth diapering, reduced plastic dad. And really, if my husband can do it, you can, too. New to the green journey? Is your shade of green more of a brown? That's ok! My goal is to inspire you to make great choices for your family regardless of your place on the green spectrum. This is an eco-snobbery free zone! I'm on this journey, too. My goal for myself and my family is to make better choices than I did last year - but I give myself permission to not be perfect (and you should, too!). Not every project or recipe on this site is overtly "green" - this is my place to share what I'm cooking, crafting, DIYing, growing, canning, etc. Of course I feature great green crafts and products I think you'll love, too. (Have a great green craft or product? Let me know!) So, why green? Even though I grew up in the Pacific Northwest where it seems everyone is some shade of green by default, I thought the people who ate organic food were elitist hippies (read more about my history in my Green Mom Manifesto AKA I am Not a Hippie). As an adult, though, I had to come to terms with some chronic health problems - the kinds of things that tend to be symptoms of overexposure to phthalates (chemicals used in plastic) and genetically modified foods. When we tried to have kids, we had problems staying pregnant. We currently have a healthy four year old son - but we both agree that he's nothing short of a miracle (read his story here). I know moms always say that about their kids but with him it's really true - even our doctor was shocked he made it through my the entire pregnancy and is a happy healthy guy. By the time our son was born, we'd decided we wanted to cloth diaper and limit his vaccine schedule to reduce exposure to toxins but it was our amazing pediatrician, Dr. Thomas, who really helped educate us on the importance of reducing over all toxin load by choosing foods wisely and eliminating as many endocrine-disrupting chemicals from our lives as possible. In short: We wanted to live healthier, take good care of the planet and bodies God gave us, and reduce the risk of obesity and chronic health problems for my son by living reduced toxin lives. I love learning how to do things from scratch - even if I only ever do it once - in part to appreciate the modern conveniences we are surrounded with. I'm a teacher at heart so of course, once I learn how to do something I'll want to teach you, too!
