About

The Chief-Leader is a New York City-based weekly newspaper focused on municipal government and civil servants, as well as issues affecting New York State and Federal employees.

Founded in 1897 as an independent newspaper for city firemen, The Chief-Leader has been owned since 1919 by the Prial family. Over the years, coverage has expanded to include all public workers, from police and correction officers to teachers and clerical employees.

The newspaper continues to be a champion of civil service. It's sometimes referred to as the "Civil Service Bible," and is considered a definitive source for information on union contract negotiations and settlements, public-employee pensions, and labor-related legislation.

The Chief-Leader is published 52 weeks a year, and is available on newsstands throughout the New York City metro area each Tuesday morning. Our online edition is available on Monday nights.
