Good concept but could be improved

I am a DIY investor and I manage my investments with the same diversified, low cost, low tax strategy that Future Investor strives to recommend. In terms of the overall Future Advisor algorithm, there are some nice aspects that it takes into account. It is very helpful consolidating holdings across multiple accounts for a single high-level view. It models a portfolio of ETFs that are suitable for the users age and risk tolerance, taking into consideration consequences of recommendations on taxable vs. tax-deferred accounts. Overall it is a good mix. My main concern is that they incorporate value funds and small caps as a single category. These are two different asset classes, and by merging them together, you may have an unintentionally unbalanced portfolio. In terms of the actual trade recommendations, I have found the algorithm will simultaneously recommend buying a fund in one tax deferred account, while selling the same fund in another tax deferred account. This will just add to portfolio costs by buying and selling the same funds. Lastly, the algorithm does not take into account funds that are not in its recommended list. They just recommend selling everything, then re-buying the recommended funds, rather than focusing trade recommendation on portfolio gaps. For my 401k where the recommended ETFs are not available, they don't even include this account at all in the analysis. As far as the app goes, it would be nice to see a pie chart analyzing the portfolio allocations of the target vs. current portfolio. This is currently not an option, and is a missed opportunity. They do show a Monte Carlo projection of the current vs. recommended portfolio which is helpful but does not go far enough without the specific breakdown of the differences. This would be more useful to make trades in order to fill specific gaps.

Horrible update. All the good info is gone, updates are a day old, and it defaults continuously to an activity screen that provides no information or capability. Might as well not use it.

Crashes often

This version is very unstable. Crashes more often than the last release, making it frustrating to do anything on the app. Love the service, just not the app.
