Each tour is enhanced with layers of extra content; images from the city archives; all waiting to be discovered as you stroll.

How to use this app

This app gives you a heads-up experience: plug in your headphones, pop your mobile device in your pocket and simply follow our audio directions without ever having to look down at a screen. If you do want extra guidance there's an on-screen map available at all times showing your location, tour route and tour points.

- Easy to follow audio directions and on-screen map
- Professional narration
- More tours coming soon

The Manchester Walking Tours app was created using Under The Paving Stones, a new digital platform from magneticNorth - a digital design company based in Manchester. The Under The Paving Stones platform allows you to create a custom audio and visual experience of a place using GPS to trigger audio so the user can explore an area at their own pace.

In order to trigger audio along your walking tour we use the GPS functionality of your iPhone. We only enable GPS once you have started your tour and once it is complete we disable it. To allow you to place your phone in your pocket when walking the tour we continue to track your location in the background. Continued use of GPS running in the background can drastically decrease battery life, so please ensure your phone battery is fully charged before starting a tour. We do not capture or save your location information, GPS is only used for triggering audio as you walk the route.

Doesn't work

Once you download the app, you still need to download each individual tour. Every time I tried, none of them worked.
Accounts Framework
The Accounts framework provides access to user accounts stored in the Accounts database. An account stores the login credentials of a particular service, such as Twitter, that can be used as authentication for the service. By implementing the Accounts framework into your app, you do not need to be responsible for storing account logins yourself. Instead, the user can grant access for your app to use their account login credentials, bypassing the need to type their username and password. If no account for a particular service exists in the user’s Accounts database, you can let them create and save an account from within your app.
Address Book
The Address Book framework provides access to a centralized contacts database, called the Address Book database, that stores a user’s contacts. Applications such as Mail and Messages use this database to present information about known and unknown persons.
AdSupport
The Ad Support framework provides apps with access to an identifier that can be used only for serving advertisements, as well as a flag which indicates whether a user has limited ad tracking. Accessing the advertising identifier requires apps to read and honor the opt-out flag.
Altitude Framework
AVFoundation
The AV Foundation framework provides an Objective-C interface for managing and playing audio-visual media in iOS and OS X applications.
CFNetwork
CocoaPods
CocoaPods is the dependency manager for Objective-C projects. It has thousands of libraries and can help you scale your projects elegantly.
CoreBluetooth Framework
The Core Bluetooth framework provides the classes needed for your iOS and Mac apps to communicate with devices that are equipped with Bluetooth low energy wireless technology.
Core Data
Core Foundation Framework
Core Foundation is a framework that provides fundamental software services useful to application services, application environments, and to applications themselves. Core Foundation also provides abstractions for common data types, facilitates internationalization with Unicode string storage, and offers a suite of utilities such as plug-in support, XML property lists, URL resource access, and preferences.
Core Image
Core Image is an image processing and analysis technology designed to provide near real-time processing for still and video images.
Core Location Framework
The Core Location framework lets you determine the current location or heading associated with a device. The framework uses the available hardware to determine the user’s position and heading. You use the classes and protocols in this framework to configure and schedule the delivery of location and heading events. You can also use it to define geographic regions and monitor when the user crosses the boundaries of those regions. In iOS, you can also define a region around a Bluetooth beacon.
