The TechnoServe and Citi Foundation PAYED Project partnership was created to solve the challenge of unemployment by working with youth in Africa. The program scaled up the proven “Mom & Pop Project”, which was targeted at 'Mom and Pop shops' often referred to as ‘provision stores’ retail Shop model and explore innovative activities that target youth and further enhance project results.
Pan African Youth Entrepreneur Development (PAYED) program therefore, is a micro retail program that aims to equip youth owners, managers, or employees of existing retail shops with business, retail and financial management skills that will help them expand their businesses and increase revenue.
The program in its 3rd year is being implemented in four African countries Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria and Cote d’Ivoire.
The micro retail outfits play a critical role in many developing economies as it provides employment to youth, creates income for millions and makes everyday products accessible in low-income communities. These enterprises hold the potential to improve thousands of lives. Youth unemployment is one of the greatest challenges that inhibit economic growth, stability, and broad-based prosperity from being realized across Africa.
OUR APPROACH
Our methodology combines individual in-store consulting, group training, and innovative digital solutions. Through these tools, we will equip shop owners with management skills and business knowledge, foster business support networks and connections, and optimize stores’ financial performance, aesthetics, product ranges and displays.
The project will operate in three Phase:
Mobilization and Recruitment Phase- An inception strategy shall be drafted which will help identify and build off of the successes of the previous Phase, while improving the design by testing how to include both Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) and non-Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (non FMCG) business categories
Training Phase- This will improve youth’s self-confidence, business and financial management skills exhibited by improvements in various best practices including business planning, record keeping, inventory management, marketing, pricing, sourcing, customer service, and merchandising.
Aftercare Phase- A one-on-one advisory support shall be offered to help youth tackle and overcome the problems facing their businesses.
